Estate Administration

The administrator’s role.
The estate’s work.

A practical approach to administering a Texas estate, from understanding the appointment to completing the required work.

SCOTT H. STILES · ESTATE ADMINISTRATOR

Taking responsibility for administration.

An estate administrator is a court-appointed personal representative. The work begins with the authority established for the estate and continues through the responsibilities that follow. That includes the practical management of assets as well as the legal procedures that govern administration.

I approach the role by identifying the estate’s immediate needs, organizing the records, and connecting each next action with the authority and process it requires. The type of administration, family circumstances, assets, claims, and court orders shape the plan.

The work involved

01

Understand the appointment

Review the type of administration, qualification, letters, any bond requirements, and the court’s existing orders.

02

Identify and protect assets

Gather ownership information, organize records, and address preservation of property and other estate assets.

03

Address claims and obligations

Review notices, claims, expenses, and the procedures that govern their handling and payment.

04

Keep the administration documented

Maintain records of receipts, disbursements, property decisions, and actions taken during the administration.

05

Account, distribute, and complete

Attend to applicable reporting, authorized distributions, final accounting, and the steps required to conclude the administration.
